A man, woman and young boy were killed Sunday night after their minivan apparently spun out of control and was struck by a big rig on Interstate 5 near Magic Mountain Parkway in Santa Clarita, the California Highway Patrol said.

A young girl in the vehicle suffered major injuries. She was taken to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. A county coroner’s official said the two adult victims were in their 20s and the dead child was about 3 years old. Their names were not released.

Witnesses said the minivan swerved upon entering the freeway shortly after 7:15 p.m., was hit by the tractor-trailer and then spun around, striking several other vehicles, said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos.

The accident shut down most of the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 and the northbound freeway onramp for several hours.
