Laolagi Is Named 4A Player of the Year

Linebacker Luke Laolagi of City Section champion Lake Balboa Birmingham has been chosen the 4A player of the year by the Los Angeles Football Coaches Assn.

Birmingham’s Ed Croson was selected 4A coach of the year, and Patriot lineman Hunter Rothman shared offensive lineman of the year honors with Aleksey Lanis of Los Angeles Crenshaw.

City runner-up L.A. Dorsey had two players on the 4A All-City team. Running back Stafon Johnson was the offensive player of the year, and defensive end Courtney Williams was the defensive lineman of the year.

Linebacker Kevin Garrett of Harbor City Narbonne was the defensive player of the year.

Earning 3A player of the year honors was North Hollywood running back Marlon Lucky. L.A. Fairfax’s Shane Cox was the coach of the year, and the Lions’ quarterback, Troy Jackson, was named the offensive player of the year.

Other 3A awards went to Ben Viramontes of South Gate (defensive player of the year), Isiah Greene of Fairfax (defensive lineman of the year) and Cesar Larios of Huntington Park (offensive lineman of the year).

Larry Muir has been promoted to football coach at Valencia. He was the offensive coordinator the last two years and helped develop the spread passing attack that enabled the Vikings to reach the Southern Section Division II championship game last season.

Muir replaces Brian Stiman, who retired from coaching.

Girls’ Soccer

Kate Glenn scored in the 20th minute, and Rocky Hearst added a goal in the 55th minute for Los Alamitos, which defeated Anaheim Esperanza, 2-1, in a Sunset League game Thursday at Esperanza.

Los Alamitos (15-2-4, 4-0-2), the defending league champion and No. 4-ranked team in the Southern Section Division I, is the No. 6 team in the nation according to Student Sports magazine.

Lynsey Domene scored the lone goal for Esperanza (10-6-2, 4-2-0), ranked No. 7 in Division I, in the 70th minute of play.
