Wilson Seeks Record Fifth Title in Row

Long Beach Wilson will try to win an unprecedented fifth consecutive Southern Section title when it plays Newport Harbor on Tuesday night at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

The top-seeded Bruins (25-3) won four a row from 1996 to ‘99, but the streak was ended by Newport Harbor in 2000. Matt Sagehorn, the Division I co-player of the year as a junior at Wilson last season, said his biggest goal was to end the season on a positive note for the senior-dominated team.

“We kind of want to do it for ourselves,” Sagehorn said. “Winning five in a row would just be a bonus.”

Two division finals will take place Monday at Belmont Plaza, including top-seeded Anaheim Servite playing second-seeded Los Alamitos in a Division II in a rematch of the 2002 final won by Servite, 15-8.

Wilson and third-seeded Newport Harbor (25-4) haven’t met in a section final since 1981. They played twice this season, however. The Sailors defeated Wilson, 9-5, in the season opener, then lost, 7-6, in the final of the South Coast tournament.

“All we want to try and do is improve each game,” Wilson Coach Tony Martinho said.
