Water Polo Powers Will Play Today

Long Beach Wilson and Newport Harbor, which have won every Southern Section Division I boys’ water polo title since 1996, will play today at Newport Harbor.

Wilson, winner of four consecutive section titles and eight of the last nine and ranked No. 1 in the preseason Division I coaches’ poll, is led by senior Matt Sagehorn, a Division I first-team selection a year ago, and senior Charles Wright, a second-team pick.

Newport Harbor, ranked No. 3, will counter with senior Clay Jorth, also a returning first-team selection, and his brother Clinton, a sophomore.

In Division II play, No. 4 Villa Park plays host to No. 10 Santa Margarita and No. 2 Los Alamitos plays host to No. 3 Anaheim Servite tonight at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Los Alamitos.

Cross-Country

Many of the Southland’s best teams will compete Saturday in the Irvine Woodbridge Invitational. Sessions run from 7:40 to 10 a.m. and 4:45 to 9 p.m., followed by sweepstakes races.

In the girls’ sweepstakes, Murrieta Valley will be challenged by Clovis Buchanan, Simi Valley Royal, Chino Hills Ayala and Santa Rosa Maria Carillo. Top individuals include Kauren Tarver of Phelan Serrano, Lauren Saylor of Buchanan and Whitney Blue of Newport Harbor.

In the boys’ sweepstakes, Division I state champion Simi Valley Royal will be challenged by Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic, Lake Forest El Toro, Murrieta Valley, Chino Don Lugo and Clovis.
