From Times Staff Reports

Two games into the season, Wilmington Banning is looking for a new football coach after the resignation Tuesday of Randy Block.

Block resigned despite the administration’s desire that he stay, according to Morris Noble, an assistant principal in charge of athletics.

“We wanted him to continue. When he took the job, he knew it was a tough job, a tough community that cares about football,” Noble said. “We lost the first game, and we had some problems, and he said he couldn’t deal with it anymore.”

Because Banning (0-2) practiced on Labor Day, in violation of City Section rules, the school was given a two-day no-practice suspension.

Block, who coached at Oxnard Rio Mesa from 2001 to ‘03, could not be reached. Mo Espinosa, the frosh-soph coach, will be the interim coach.

Banning had been outscored, 87-3. The Pilots have a bye this week before playing at Los Angeles Garfield on Sept. 23.
