Upon further review, kick was good

Jim Benkert, the football coach at Westlake Village Westlake High, watched video Saturday from his team’s 23-22 loss to Agoura the night before and concluded that his kicker, Stephen Murphy, should have been credited with a potentially game-winning 41-yard field goal with 13 seconds left.

Instead, the officials ruled the kick was no good after the ball supposedly hit the crossbar and bounced back toward the field.

But video from an end-zone camera showed that the ball hit the middle gooseneck bar that supports the crossbar -- from behind -- before bouncing back toward the field.

“It was a million-to-one shot,” Benkert said.

It was another strange ending for the Agoura-Westlake game that has provided a series of bizarre conclusions.

In 2004, Westlake won on the game’s final play by returning a kickoff with multiple laterals. In 2006, Westlake won in double overtime when Agoura’s running back fumbled while headed into the end zone.

Agoura Coach Charlie Wegher, when told of the video, said, “We’ve lost a couple of controversial calls, so it was Westlake’s turn.”

It was Agoura’s first victory over Westlake in football since 1995.

Struggles continue

In its first game under interim Coach Jose Rosa, Compton Dominguez battled host Lawndale Leuzinger to a scoreless halftime tie before succumbing in the second half of a 13-0 defeat that left the Dons 0-5 for the first time since 1982.

Marcus Darden and Darnell Monday each gained more than 100 yards rushing for Dominguez, which failed to score on two drives deep into Leuzinger territory.

Record-setters

Canyon Country Canyon quarterback Jordan Adamczyk completed 18 of 27 passes for 402 yards and five touchdowns in the host Cowboys’ 35-21 victory over West Hills Chaminade, surpassing the school record of 397 yards passing set by Nate Longshore in 2003.

Canyon receiver Chris Rivas had 13 catches for a record 301 yards and four touchdowns.

Bruins watch

Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos quarterback Richard Brehaut completed 18 of 25 passes for 218 yards and one touchdown during the visiting Grizzlies’ 24-14 victory over Fontana Kaiser.

Trojans watch

Harbor City Narbonne receiver Byron Moore Jr. had kickoff returns of 48 and 50 yards before suffering a slight shoulder strain in the second quarter of the Gauchos’ 56-34 victory over visiting Westchester.

Moore sat out the remainder of the game as a precaution but should be able to play in Friday’s home game against Los Alamitos, Narbonne Coach Manuel Douglas said.
