Jones leads Upland to Division 2 championship

In her final game for Upland High, Washington-bound pitcher Whitney Jones wanted to go out with a bang.

Jones proceeded to have a standout performance from both the circle and the plate to lead Upland (21-9-1) to a 10-2 victory over Temecula Valley (18-13) in the Division 2 championship at Barber Park in Irvine.

Jones breezed through the first four innings, retiring all 12 batters. Then in the fifth, she hit a run-scoring double that sparked the game-defining five-run scoring rally that gave Upland a 5-0 advantage.

Temecula Valley got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth after Tiffany McIntosh, who singled, scored on an error by the shortstop. Samantha Camello added an RBI fielder’s choice in the sixth for the Golden Bears.

Even though Jones’ hopes for a no-hitter were ruined in the fifth, she wasn’t fazed. “The goal was to win,” Jones said. “Not throw a perfect game.”

Then in the seventh, with Upland ahead 8-2, Jones put an exclamation mark on the Scots’ first championship since 1997.

Jones, who gave up five hits, two runs, one walk and struck out nine, belted a two-run homer.

“To end like this,” she said. “There’s no greater feeling.”

Santa Margarita 12, Corona 9 — In the Division 1 final, Santa Margarita won its first softball championship.

After the Eagles (18-3) took a 12-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, Corona scored eight runs to give them a scare.

Corona (22-11-1) was making its first title game appearance since 2004.

Santa Monica 11, North Torrance 3 — Emma Woo belted a grand slam with two out in the fifth inning to give second-seeded Santa Monica (27-5) a 5-2 advantage over North Torrance (23-11) in the Southern Section Division 4 championship.

The Vikings then capitalized on that momentum in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to claim their first softball championship.

Lake Isabella Kern Valley 8, San Pedro Rolling Hills Prep 0 — The Southern Section Division 7 championship was a pitchers’ duel until Kern Valley (24-4) exploded in the fifth inning, quickly scoring seven runs on eight hits to rout second-seeded Rolling Hills Prep (20-2).
