CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION

Fairfax 73, Cleveland 64
Jamal Boykin, a 6-7 junior, scored 29 points, including a career-best four three-pointers, and Josh Shipp added 25 points as the top-seeded Lions (23-4) advance to the City Champonship game with the victory at Loyola Marymount.

Fairfax opened leads of 11 points in the first half and 15 point in the second half, taking advantage of Boykin’s dominating play.

“The way he played was the difference,” Cleveland Coach Andre Chevalier said. “He was on fire.”

Nick Young scored 28 points for Cleveland (25-4), which got as close as seven points in the fourth quarter. But that’s when UCLA-bound Shipp took over, scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Fairfax has been the City runner-up four times since 1995 and is looking for its first title since 1987.

Taft 65, Dorsey 63
Jordan Farmar signed to play at UCLA next season, but he isn’t ready to become a Bruin just yet.

The 6-foot-2 senior guard had 29 points and seven assists to lead Woodland Hills Taft to a victory over Los Angeles Dorsey Friday night at West L.A. College. His two free throws with 13 seconds left were the deciding points.

Jabari Samuel’s rebound and layup gave third-seeded Taft (26-2) a 62-60 lead with 37 seconds left. Kyle Gibson missed a jumper on Dorsey’s ensuing possession and Farmar was fouled intentionally.

“This was the biggest game of our lives, so we all had to step it up,” said Farmar, who made all six of his free throws. “With this team, you never know who the hero is going to be. Tonight it was Jabari. His basket was huge.”

Dawayne Cotton made a desperation three-pointer and was fouled by Taft’s Matt Cook with four seconds left to pull the second-seeded Dons (24-3) to within one point, but his free throw hit the front of the rim and Pierce Brooks tapped the rebound to Farmar, who ran out the clock.

Chuma Awaji had 23 points, including five three-pointers, while Jonathan Heard and Gibson each added 12 for Dorsey, which opened the second half with an 11-0 run and led 50-42 at the start of the fourth quarter.

CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION

Cleveland 86, Fremont 79
Senior forward Nick Young had 32 points and 17 rebounds and sophomore guard Corey Duncan scored a career-high 22 to lead the Cavaliers at Fremont High.

Young scored five points to help Cleveland get out to a 27-12 lead after the first quarter, and his jump shot at the end of the third helped the fifth-seeded Cavaliers take a 61-47 lead into the fourth.

Young went to the bench with his fourth foul early in the final quarter and when he returned with 3:51 remaining, the fourth-seeded Pathfinders had cut the lead to 67-58. Young then fouled out 21 seconds later, but Fremont could only get within six points with 1:45 remaining before Duncan drilled a three-pointer 11 seconds later, his second since Young fouled out.

Despite being just a sophomore, Duncan said he wasn’t worried about picking up the scoring slack after Young had fouled out.

``I have confidence in the way I shoot my jumper,’’ he said.

Danny Williams and Thomas Herring scored 24 points each for the Pathfinders, but did not help their team’s chances at the line, making just eight of 21 free throws combined.

Taft 69, Crenshaw 66
Calvin Haynes, a sophomore guard playing in only his sixth game of the season after being academically ineligible, scored a career-high 27 points for the Toreadors (25-2), who advanced to the championship semifinals for the second consecutive year.

Jordan Farmar scored 23 points for Taft and made one of two free throws with nine seconds left to give the Toreadors a three-point margin.

Crenshaw (18-7) had a chance to tie the game, but a three-point attempt by Brandon Sampay was missed with one second left. Hamil Madyun led Crenshaw with 21 points.

Taft held a 10-point lead with four minutes left, but five turnovers and two missed free throws on one-and-one situations let the Cougars back into the game.
