DIVISION II

Corona del Mar, Irvine Northwood and Irvine University were in a league of their own at the Southern Section Division II Swimming Championships.

It was the Pacific Coast League. Corona Del Mar, ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times, won its first title while Northwood placed second and University finished fourth behind defending-champion Upland in the girls’ meet, and Northwood won its first title and University was the runner-up in boys’ competition as Pacific Coast League teams dominated races Saturday at Belmont Plaza.

“I think it gives our league a real pat on the back,” said Corona del Mar Coach Doug Volding.

Freshman Stephanie Gabert set a meet record by more than half a second in winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.36 and sophomore Lexie Shue won the 500 freestyle and placed second in the 200 individual medley for the Sea Kings, who were runners-up last season.

Shue won the 500 in 4:51.23 and timed 2:06.45 in the 200 IM. Both times were personal-best marks.

Shue, who also helped Corona del Mar win the Division II girls’ water polo championship last winter, was key to the Sea Kings’ meet-high 238 points. Northwood finished with 192 points, followed by Upland with 189, University with 185.5 and Sunny Hills with 154.

“I was pretty much just trying to help the team,” Shue said. “We were all really motivated, and everybody contributed.”

Senior Adam Rollins won the 200 free with a time of 1:41.91 and placed second in the 100 free (46.35) to lead Northwood, a five-year old school, to its first boys’ championship.

The Timberwolves scored a meet-high 202 points. University placed second with 179 points, followed by Upland (159), Walnut (152), and La Canada (147).

Junior Jeremy Sotomayor, a transfer from Peru whose eligibility was brought into question during the final week of the regular season but was resolved in time for postseason competition, won the 100 butterfly and freshman teammate Tyler McClure won the 100 backstroke for the first-ever titles for Simi Valley Royal swimmers.

Palm Springs senior Matthew Sullivan was the lone double winner of the night, taking the 50 free in 20.86 seconds and the 100 free in 46.09 seconds.

DIVISION III

Murrieta Valley junior Sean Doyle won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events to lead the Nighthawks’ boys’ team to its third consecutive Division III championship, and Murrieta Valley’s girls’ team did not win a single swimming event but nevertheless claimed its first title thanks to depth and diving Saturday at Belmont Plaza.

Murrieta Valley became the sixth school to capture boys’ and girls’ titles in the same year, and the Nighthawks’ victories marked the 17th time there has been a double victory by a school since 1972, when girls’ swimming began. Mission Viejo accomplished the feat 11 consecutive times from 1976-1986.

“This is a goal reached now,” said Genevieve Barro, who coaches both of the Nighthawks’ teams. “The girls’ team came here wanting to do what the boys have done. They did not want to leave here without a championship.”

Doyle had Murrieta Valley’s only individual victories, winning the 200 free in 1:40.48 to defend the title he won last season. He also won the 100 free with a time of 46.32.

Otherwise, the Nighthawks overwhelmed opponents with their sheer numbers. The boys, who won all three relays, had 14 swimmers advance out of preliminaries. The girls’ team had eight swimmers who qualified and junior Kelly Cooper won the 1-meter diving competition to give the Nighthawks 20 points toward the victory.

“It was a good day,” Barro said. “We have always wanted to have the boys and the girls win titles.”

Sophomore Courtney Kilkuts of Corona Santiago had the most impressive times of the day. She won the 200 IM with a meet-record time of 2:02.06 and won the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.57.

Other notable performances came from a pair of freshmen.

Ann Tsuchiya, a ninth grader at Pasadena Mayfield, won the 200 free in 1:52.89 and tied Yucaipa sophomore Jessie Perazzo for a victory in the 100 free. Both finished in 52.32 seconds. On the boys’ side, Corona freshman Kyle Smith won the 200 IM in 1:55.49 and the 100 breaststroke in 59.48.

SOUTHERN SECTION FINALS
At Belmont Plaza

DIVISION I

Courtney Cashion answered all questions, and so did her team. Danny Beal answered all challengers, and so did his team. And Jessica Hardy made a name for herself, all by herself.

Cashion, who began the season a month late because of academic ineligibility, put to rest any doubts that she had returned to top form as she set meet records in both sprints and led Irvine to its eighth consecutive Division Girls’ Swimming Championship while Beal defended Division I titles he won last season in the 200 freee and the 100 butterfly to lead the Chargers to their first team title Friday night at Belmont Plaza.

Dos Pueblos finished with 222 points in the team competition. Defending champion Mission Viejo, aided by 40 points from three divers, finished second with 195.5 points. Damien finished third with 156 points.

The Irvine girls clinched victor with 203.5 after winning the 400 free relay over second place Glendora in the final event of the night.

Cashion, the two-time defending champion in the 50 freestyle, timed 22.75 seconds to win that event again and then clocked 49.26 in the 100 free to complete a four-year sweep in that race.

“I just wanted to finish strong,” said Cashion, who will swim at Arizona. “This is a nice ending.”

Hardy a junior at Long Beach Wilson, had a strong finish to a stellar season in winning the 100 breaststroke in a national-record time of 1:00.41 to beat the previous standard of 1:00.74. She also won the 200 im title in 2:01.98.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better day,” said Hardy, who defeated defending champion Nicolette Teo of Mission Viejo in the breaststroke.

As expected, the Stanford-bound Beal led the Chargers to their title by winning the 200 free in a quick 1:36.89 and the butterfly in 48.39.

Beal’s effort in the 200 put the Chargers back on track after a dissapointing third-place finish in the 200 medley relay to start the night. He also helped Dos Pueblos rebound from an eighth place finish in the 200 free relay and clinch the title with a victory in the 400 free relay to end the meet.

Santa Barbara senior Tyler Wilson and Glendora senior Courtney Eads also ended their careers well, with each going away a double winner. Wilson defended the title he won last year in the 100 free by clocking 45.18, and he went 20.54, just off the meet record of 20.27, in 50 free. Eads timed 1:47.55 in the 200 free and 4:49.21 in the 500 free.

La Canada junior, Maryann Boosalis, the fourth place finisher in the 200 yard individual medley in last year’s Southern Section Division II Championships, was fourth-seeded going into preliminaries but failed to advance to today’s event finals after being disqualified for an illegal turn between the first and second legs of the race at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Boosalis, the defending division champion in the 100 breaststroke also settled for the second-best qualyfying time in that event as Corona del Mar freshman, Stephanie Gabert eclipsed Boosalis’ 2003 meet record with a top qualyfying time of 1:03.94.

Sophomore Lexie Shue qualified first in the 500 freestyle (4:57.75) and second in the 200 IM for the Sea Kings, last year’s runner up in the girls’ team competition. 2003 girls winner, Upland, got the top qualifying time in 100 free by junior Jenna Schuster, who also anchored the Highlanders’ top-qualifying 400 free relay team.

The Irvine Northwood boys’ team made a strong showing behind senior Adam Rollins, who had the top qualifying times in the 100 free (47.22) and the 200 free (1:43.41). Rollins also anchored the Timberwolves’ 400 free relay team that qualified first with a time of 3:15.38 and also included Clark Condict, Mathieu Welche and Lugar Choi. The Timberwovles’ 200 medley relay team of Rollins, Andrew Seo, Welche and Choi qualified second behind Walnut.

Walnut got top qualifying times from junior Joseph Sutandyo in the 100 butterfly (52.30) on the boys’ side and from freshman Rachel Grant in the 200 IM (2:06.02) on the girls’ side.

Murrieta Valley High junior Sean Boyle had the top qualifying time in two events and the Nighthawks had four swimmers advance to finals in the breaststroke during Division IV preliminaries Thursday at Belmont Plaza.

Boyle, the defending division champion in the 200 freestyle, timed 1:40.37 in the event. He also clocked 46.44 in the 100 free, a new event for him after winning the 100 butterfly title last season.

The Nighthawks’ Eric Starkweather, Frankie Gotte, Ian Deans and Cody Wilson qualified third through sixth in the breast, won by Cerritos sophomore Jan-Michael Pineda in 1:00.74. He was followed by Corona freshman Kyle Smith, who timed 1:01.05.

The top swimmer on the girls’ side was Corona Santiago sophomore Courtney Kilkuts, the fastest qualifier in the 200 individual medley (2:04.97) and the 100 breast (1:06.12).

DIVISION IV

Brett Shiflett of Westlake Village Oaks Christian and Don Holbrook of Los Altos each put the finishing touches on distinguished careers at the Southern Section Division IV Swimming Championships Thursday night at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Shiflett, a senior who won her fifth and sixth individual section titles, clocked 1:49.80 in the 200 freestyle, breaking her own 2003 meet record by more than a second. The senior, who will swim for Princeton next season, finished up her career by breaking another record with a time of 51.15 in the 100 freestyle, an event in which she had never before competed in section finals.

Shiflett edged Thousand Oaks La Reina freshman Emily Bibb, who went 51.56 in the 100. Both swimmers bettered the meet standard of 51.70 set in 2001 by Etiwanda’s Heather Anderson.

“I needed to go out with a bang,” said Shiflett. “I just felt really strong. I spent a whole season having fun with my team, but this was definitely the time to just swim fast.”

Shiflett’s efforts helped the Lions score 135 points and finish fifth in the team standings behind meet winner Quartz Hill, which totaled 215 points, mostly on the strength of victories in the 200-medley and 400-free relays that gave the Rebels 80 points. La Reina placed second with 200 points, followed by Rancho Santa Margarita St. Margaret’s with 167. Carpinteria finished fourth with 146 points.

Los Altos, meanwhile, gave Holbrook a nice send-off by winning its second consecutive boys championship to cap a 16-year career with the Conquerors.

Senior Manuel Sanchez won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.33 to lead the Conquerors, who did not win a race otherwise but collected 244 points with their depth. Quartz Hill finished second with 209 points, while Oaks Christian was third with 192. Rubidoux placed fourth with 143 points and Ventura St. Bonaventure was fifth with 125.

The Oaks Christian boys got a record-setting swim from their 200-medley relay team of Mike Blanchard, Alec Avedissian, Jon Pare, and Adam Corriea, who won in 1:40.68, 18 one-hundredths of a second faster than Cerritos’ best time of 1:40.86 in the 2001 meet.

Ventura St. Bonaventure senior John Paul Oliver defended the title he won last season in the boys 200 free, clocking 1:43.67, and also won the 100 butterfly, where he placed third last year, in 51.69. He missed the meet record by 35 one-hundredths of a second.

In another strong performance by Ventura County area swimmers, Carpinteria teammates Sarma Zemjanis and Emlynn Tursich placed one-two in the 100 backstroke as both eclipsed Tursich’s two-year-old meet record of 57.79. Zemjanis won in 57.31 and Tursich clocked 57.34.

DIVISION I

Irvine senior Courtney Cashion began defense of the Southern Section Division I 50 freestyle titles. She has won the past two seasons in record fashion.

Cashion won the race in 23.02 seconds in preliminaries, beating the previous meet standard of 23.04 by two one-hundreths of a second Wednesday night at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

While well on her way to a third consecutive championship in the meet’s shortest event, Cashion could also go one better in the 100 freestyle. The Division champion each of the past three seasons, she will go for a four-year sweep in Friday’s final after winning the preliminary race in 50.74. The time was just more than a second off her own 2002 meet-record time of 49.45 seconds.

“I’m getting excited about Friday,” Cashion said. “I was not expecting the times that I put up so far. I needed this. I do carry these girls with me and if I’m on the right boat, then they’re on the right boat.”

In what is expected to be among the best races in the finals, Long Beach Wilson junior Jessica Hardy won the 100 breastrstroke in 1:01.76, beating out defending champion Nicolette Teo of Mission Viejo (1:03.17). Hardy was the runner-up last season, but was top-seeded in the event for preliminaries.

DIVING

Note: The top 16 finishers score points toward swimming totals.

DIVISION I
at Mission Viejo Aquatics Center

Boys

A victory by Dwight Dumais was in the stars, or at least, in the genes.

Dumais, a junior at Ventura Buena, led from start to finish and won the Southern Section Division I boys’ diving championship, becoming the third member of his family to capture two titles.

Dumais, who also won the Division I title as a freshman in 2002 and was the runner-up as a sophomore last season, scored a meet-high 602.25 points to beat Laguna Hills junior Brian Lawler, who was second with 528.65 points. Long Beach Wilson senior Javier Rivas placed third and Mission Viejo freshmen Steven Starks and Patrick DeBoi placed fourth and fifth respectively. Last season, Lawler was a fourth place finisher and Rivas was fifth.

The youngest of five siblings, Dumais grew up watching oldest brother Justin win section titles in 1995 and 1996 and seeing another brother, Troy, win in 1997 and 1998. Still another brother, Brice, won the championship in 1999 and sister Leanne Dumais claimed the girls’ title last year.

Los Alamitos freshman Tory Ishimatsu won the girls’ championship Tuesday with 500.10 points and the Griffins boasted two of the top three finishers.

Teammate Jackie Jones wound up third, behind Flintridge Sacred Heart junior Marisa Samaniego. Samaniego jumped from fourth place after her eighth of 11 dives with strong performances on her final two attempts.
