Marina boys off to a hot start

A tournament championship and six victories to start the season are on the resume of the Marina High boys’ basketball team.

The Vikings completed a four-game run Saturday at the Los Amigos Tournament by defeating Bola Grande, 67-57, in overtime in the championship game. Senior forward Buzz Stafford had 15 points and six rebounds, freshman forward Jakob Alamudun had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds, senior guard Ethan Young 14 points and four rebounds, and senior guard Braden Meyers 11 points and seven rebounds, for the Vikings.

To reach the final, Marina had to defeat Estancia in Friday’s semifinals, and breezed past the Eagles, 69-41. Stafford had 14 points and eight rebounds, Alamudun 15 points and five rebounds, Meyers 11 points and four assists, and guard Chance Sommerville 11 points.

Stafford was named MVP of the tournament, and Alamudun was name to the all-tourney team in his first varsity tournament.

The Vikings (6-0) opened play Monday at the Artesia Tournament, and took a 58-49 victory from Hawthorne. Stafford had 21 points to go with 12 rebounds, and Alamudun scored 13 points with five rebounds.

The Artesia Tournament runs through Saturday.

“Winning the Los Amigos Tournament was great for us, as we learned what it feels like to win multiple games in a row,” Marina Coach Nick Racklin said. “We don’t want that tournament to define our season, so we will continue to work on things every day to improve.”

Edison started its season Friday in Long Beach, and defeated host Cabrillo, 72-66. Junior guard Randall Walker led the way with 29 points. Senior guard Nate Matthews scored 19 points and senior center Tommy Barlow grabbed 11 rebounds.

“It was a tough opening game, as Cabrillo was very athletic and tough defensively, but we made plays when we had to and escaped with the win,” Edison Coach Rich Boyce said.

The Chargers played their first game Monday at the Corona del Mar Beach Bash, and rolled past Costa Mesa, 76-39. Walker led four Chargers in double-figures with a game-high 19 points. Sophomore guard David Atencio had 15 points, Matthews 13 points and Barlow 10 points.

Edison took on Troy in a tournament game Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The Corona del Mar Tournament continues daily through Saturday.

Next week, Edison begins play Monday at the Irvine World News Tournament. The Chargers open against Irvine at 5:30 p.m.

Fountain Valley won four of five games at the Grizzly Invitational which concluded Saturday at Godinez High. The Barons (5-1 overall) defeated Cypress (58-55, overtime), Laguna Beach (44-36) and in their final game, downed Laguna Hills, 70-49. Junior guard Matt Serven was named all-tournament.

“Every player played team-first basketball, always looking to make one more pass and get the best shot possible,” Fountain Valley Coach Steve Schultz said.

The Barons are playing this week in the Cerritos Valley Christian Tournament, which runs daily through Saturday.

Huntington Beach ended its run Saturday at the Grizzly Invitational and lost, 64-47, to Capistrano Valley.

Senior guard Shea Sueda made all-tournament for the Oilers who are 2-3 overall.

“We started off this tournament with two good wins (Godinez, Orange) and this put us in the Gold Bracket where we faced three very quality teams (Orange Lutheran, Aliso Niguel, Capo Valley),” Huntington Coach Billy Thompson said. “Our group is still building and getting better every day. We know that we have a rough schedule, but are confident that we are going to attain our goals with hard work and competitiveness.”

Huntington faced El Toro in nonleague play Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time. The Oilers play host to Ocean View at 6 p.m. Friday. Next week, they begin play at the Charlie Wilkins Classic at Westminster High, taking on Kennedy at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Ocean View ended a week-long run at its own Jim Harris Memorial Tournament of Champions Saturday and defeated Long Beach Wilson, 72-59. For the Seahawks, sophomore guard Bryson Betti had 15 points, four rebounds and five assists, senior forward Christian Anderson 12 points and four rebounds, sophomore guard Paul Head 10 points, sophomore center Mehkel Harvey 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks, and senior guard Zamir Kelly eight points and four assists.

Betti, Anderson and Harvey were named to the all-tourney team.

Ocean View, which went 3-2 in the tournament, is 4-2 overall.

“We played good in the first half against a Wilson team that has a lot of potential,” Ocean View co-head Coach Roger Holmes said. “Our defense was exceptional in the third quarter and that let us stretch an eight-point halftime lead up to 19 by the end of the quarter.

“We rebounded well and were very active for most of the game. It was a solid win to end the tournament.”

Ocean View is on the road for a 7 p.m. nonleague game at Huntington Beach, and takes on Godinez at 6 p.m. Tuesday in an opening-round game at the Loatella Tournament. The Seahawks also play co-host Katella in a 3 p.m. tourney game Wednesday.

Brethren Christian launched its season Monday at the La Verne Calvary Baptist Cougar Classic, and was defeated by Claremont The Webb Schools, 61-51. Junior guard Nate Sagastume had 17 points and five steals, junior guard Gabe Reiser scored 13 points, and junior guard/forward Joey Gutierrez had 11 points and seven assists.

Six athletes from the BC football team, which finished its CIF playoff season Nov. 27, joined the basketball team just last week.

“Considering we’ve only had three practices with the entire squad in attendance, we played a pretty good game where we played hard and showed once we get a little more organized, we will be a competitive team,” BC Coach Jon Bahnsen said.

The Warriors faced Victorville Victor Valley Christian in a tournament game Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time. The tournament continues Thursday and runs daily through Saturday.

BC starts play next week at the Loatella Tournament. The Warriors play Anaheim at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, and face Anaheim Western at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
