Track standout Michael Norman of Vista Murrieta is a big fan of hot weather, so much so that most of the colleges he was looking at attending outside of California were in Texas, where triple digit temperatures are the norm.

But even Norman is a little startled at what he and the other participants could be facing when the CIF state track and field championships are held Friday and Saturday at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

The early forecast is for a high of 106 degrees on Friday and a cooling down to 105 on Saturday.

“I do love hot weather, but 106 and 105 is a little extreme,” he said.

Norman, a USC signee, and everyone else will have to be careful about staying hydrated. The temperatures should fall under triple digits by the time running events begin at 5 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Norman, who set state records last year in the 400 (45.19) and the 200 (20.30), has the green light to do his best, and he usually comes through when the weather is scorching.

Division 1 baseball

The Southern Section Division 1 baseball semifinals will be played on Tuesday at Blair Field in Long Beach. The 4 p.m. game will match Murrieta Mesa against Valencia West Ranch. The 7 p.m. game has San Juan Capistrano JSerra taking on Studo City Harvard-Westlake.

The winners advance to the championship game Saturday night at San Manuel Stadium in San Bernardino.

There’s an Orange County flavor in the Southern Section Division 1 softball semifinals on Tuesday. It will be Santa Ana Mater Dei traveling to Norco in one semifinal, with Orange Lutheran playing at Los Alamitos in the other semifinal. The championship will be either Friday or Saturday in Irvine.

Caddie scholarship

Who knew that there was an $80,000 caddie scholarship available?

Two students from St. Monica, Kezia Setiawan and Sarahi Ortiz, each earned an $80,000 scholarship from the Western Golf Assn.’s Caddie Academy, a program that provides opportunities for young women.

They are recipients of the Chick Evans Scholarship.

“Most people in California wouldn’t know about caddying,” Setiawan said. She learned of the scholarship from a St. Monica alumnus and will attend Purdue.
