Football: City Section doubleheader on Friday offers intrigue

Share

It’s a City Section championship doubleheader on Friday at East Los Angeles College, and both games are loaded with stars and intrigue.

In the Division II final at 4 p.m., San Fernando will be bidding for a rare 14-0 season behind quarterback Cristian Solano, a Nevada commit who has passed for 3,870 yards and 42 touchdowns and run for 1,379 yards and 22 touchdowns. The Tigers’ opponent is surging South Gate (8-5), who has a junior running back, Lavell Thompson, who has rushed for 2,201 yards and 30 touchdowns. The game will be televised live by Time Warner Cable Channel 354 and 101.

In the Division I final at 8 p.m., Narbonne (11-2) will be trying to do something no City team has done since Banning more than 30 years ago. And that is try to win a third consecutive Division I title. Quarterback Eban Jackson, who was offered by New Mexico State, will finally have a healthy Johnell Jackson to hand the ball off to. He played briefly last week after being sidelined with an injury for five weeks.

Crenshaw (9-4) always thought it should have been the No. 1 seed for the playoffs, and now the Cougars get the chance to prove that point. The combination of quarterback Ajene Harris, a USC commit, and standout running back Jacob Knight are the players to watch on offense, along with receivers Michael Simmons and Nolan Grigsby. The game will be televised live by Time Warner Cable.

It’s unlikely either team will be selected for a CIF state championshp regional bowl game on Sunday.
