Football: Sylmar hoping to retain Victory Cup

Share

The JV game has barely ended and already the bleachers on both sides are jam packed for tonight’s Valley Mission League showdown between San Fernando and host Sylmar.

The teams are not only playing for neighborhood bragging rights and first place in the league standings but the winning school also keeps the Victory Cup for the year. San Fernando has never won the coveted silver trophy in the four seasons it has been awarded but the fifth time could be the charm for the defending City Section Division II champion Tigers, who are 5-0 behind senior quarterback Cristian Solano.

Solano threw for over 3,000 yards last fall and is off to a blazing start this season with 1,558 yards and 19 touchdowns to go along with five rushing touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Clarence Williams has been just as impressive for the Spartans (2-2), throwing for 1,021 yards and 16 TDs and running for three more scores.
