Boys’ basketball: Ball brothers help Chino Hills win, 91-90, in Florida

LiAngelo Ball finished with 28 points, including two free throws with eight seconds left, to lift Chino Hills to a 91-90 victory over New York Thomas Jefferson is a first-round game of the City of Palms Classic in Florida.

Brother Lonzo Ball had 22 points and 10 assists. Chino Hills improved to 6-0.

In Hawaii, Fairfax opened tournament action with a 60-37 win over Mid Pacific Institute. Jamal Hartwell had 14 points. Donald Gipson added 12 points and Babacar Thiombane contributed 14 rebounds.

It will be the battle of the unbeatens on Saturday night in the championship game of the North Orange County tournament matching Ayala and Mater Dei at Sonora. Ayala defeated Downey, 67-42. Austen Awosika had 21 points. Mater Dei defeated Servite, 65-53. Spencer Freedman scored 22 points.

In the San Fernando Valley Invitational, Crespi defeated Poly, 80-33. Mitch Mykhaylov, in his return from an injury, had 21 points and De’Anthony Melton 16. Village Christian defeated Nipomo, 80-39. Isaac Etter had 25 points and Josh Caston added 20 points. St. John Bosco defeated Chatsworth, 68-51. Crescenta Valley defeated Grant, 67-48. Trinity Classical defeated Kennedy, 47-26.

Chaminade defeated Mira Costa, 49-46. Josh Hauser contributed 18 points.

In the La Canada tournament, Damien defeated Renaissance, 64-34. Isaiah White and Bryce Peters had 15 points each. St. Francis defeated Arcadia, 68-55. Brett Gangi scored 30 points. La Canada defeated Bonita, 50-38.

In Las Vegas, Pasadena defeated Lynwood, 67-55. Campbell Hall defeated Utah Northridge, 62-56, and Utah Timpanogos, 51-41. Jordan Cohen had games of 19 and 22 points.

In the Golden League, Highland defeated Quartz Hill, 78-52. Deshay Gipson had 26 points.
