Boys’ basketball: Birmingham upsets Damien in overtime

The opening night of the state basketball playoffs produced some thrillers.

Birmingham upset Damien, 81-78, in overtime in a Division I opener. Devonte Doutrive scored 23 points and made a three-point play at the end of regulation to send it into overtime. Deschon Winston had 19 points and Adrian Byrd-Jelinek added 17 points. Bryce Peters scored 30 points for Damien.

Eastvale Roosevelt upset No. 4-seeded Fairfax, 56-55, in double overtime. Jemarl Baker made a bank shot with three seconds left after Ethan Anderson had given Fairfax a one-point lead with 12 seconds left. Baker finished with 16 points along with Matt Mitchell. Anderson had 18 points and Jamal Hartwell 16 for Fairfax.

There were five Mission League teams that won state playoff games _ Crespi, Alemany, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Chaminade and Harvard-Westlake.

No. 1-seeded Crespi defeated Dorsey, 72-59. De’Anthony Melton scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds and Brandon Williams added 20 points and 10 rebounds. Lafayette Dorsey scored 29 points for Dorsey. St. Augustine defeated Corona Centennial, 60-59. Narbonne defeated Compton, 56-54. Jeremiah Galang had 17 points. Alemany defeated Fresno Central, 81-56. DJ McDonald scored 17 points and Shacquille Dawkins 15.

Redondo defeated Clovis North, 86-73. Ryse Williams scored 19 points.

Orange Lutheran defeated Army-Navy, 63-62. KaVaughn Scott scored 14 points and Chris Williams 13.

El Camino Real defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart, 71-52. Brandon Russell had 27 points. Temecula Valley eliminated the No. 1 seed in Division II, Taft, 52-49. Hart defeated Crenshaw, 61-51 Washington upset Southern Section 1A champion Santa Monica, 64-60.

Calabasas defeated Fresno Roosevelt, 53-50. Ryan Murphy scored 18 points. Joe’l Towers scored 38 points in Bernstein’s 86-75 win over Lynwood. Riley Battin had 21 points in Oak Park’s 71-42 win over Fresno San Joaquin Memorial.

Harvard-Westlake and Chaminade advanced in Division IV to play each other. Harvard-Westlake defeated Porterville, 83-52. Ali Ikden scored 19 points. Chaminade defeated Central City, 75-53. Aidan Dolan had 20 points and Josh Hauser 17. Diamond Ranch defeated Kern Valley, 79-47. Roman Silva had 21 points and 15 rebounds. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated San Marcos, 69-61. Chibueze Jacobs scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds. Bryce Cooper added 17 points.

Christian Juzang scored 33 points in Viewpoint’s 77-37 win over Taft Union.
