There was drama at Oak Park High on Tuesday night in a Ventura County Classic game between the host Eagles and Viewpoint. Oak Park’s home crowd was pretty vocal, and there was a shootout going on between Oak Park’s Michael Alvarez and Viewpoint junior guard Christian Juzang.
Juzang started horribly, going scoreless in the first quarter and couldn’t make a shot. But he was hot from the second quarter on, when he scored 15 points. He finished with 31 points and made the game-winning basketl on a left-handed layup with 1.5 seconds left to give Viewpoint a 60-58 victory. Alvarez finished with 25 points. Freshman Riley Battin added 16 points for Oak Park.
Viewpoint will play Calabasas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Oak Park. Talk about a neighborhood rivarly _ both schools are in Calabasas.
Viewpoint’s defense came up with the stop of the game, forcing a five-second violation on an out of bounds play with 7.4 seconds left and a tie game. That gave Juzang the opportunity to get the ball in the backcourt and dribble toward the basket to make the game-winning shot. Juzang finished with five three-pointers.
It was another encouraging performance for a Viewpoint team (4-1) that plays in the Gold Coast League and will face the challenge of taking on Sierra Canyon, Windward, Campbell Hall and Brentwood later in the season.
