Boys’ basketball: Get ready for a big night in Calabasas

Share

It’s the biggest event of the week in Calabasas, and it has nothing to do with Justin Bieber.

First place in the Marmonte League will be on the line on Friday night at Calabasas when Westlake (17-6, 9-0) comes to town, and the Coyotes’ home crowd, known as The Pack, figures to be louder and crazier than ever.

“I hope it is quiet, but I expect it to be loud,” Westlake Coach Rob Bloom said.

Calabasas (17-5, 8-1) lost to the Warriors, 61-57, on Jan. 8 in a road game. That was the return of former Westlake player Larry Bush, who struggled at times against his former teammates. Now former Calabasas player Michael Hayon returns to his old school and faces a similar challenge.

Westlake is 7-0 since Hayon became eligible. He’s averaging nine rebounds a game, and Bloom said Hayon’s development has been critical for the Warriors, who are hoping to gain a high seed in the Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.

Westlake won its first league title in 17 years last season, and a win Friday would pretty much wrap up another league title.

“We’re playing real well right now,” Bloom said. “We can make a real statement with a win, but they’re going to be tough.”
