Football: A talented group of defensive backs

As far as defensive backs go, the competition for No. 1 will be pretty intense, because there are many top individuals.

Certainly the most highly decorated before the season begins is Darnay Holmes of Calabasas. He’s probably the most highly regarded uncommitted player left at any position in Southern California. He’s fast, experienced, has great instincts and is versatile.

Few players had a better summer than Mater Dei cornerback Quentin Lake. All he does is cover his receivers as well as anyone can. And he had seven interceptions last season, so it’s not like he was unknown.

Elijah Gates of Buena Park boasts an impressive list of college scholarship offers. Ditto for Elijah Hicks of La Mirada.

Brandon McKinley of Orange Lutheran is a Washington commit. Thomas Graham of Rancho Cucamonga has lots of speed. Brendan Radley-Hiles of Calabasas is a junior transfer from Bishop Gorman known for his aggressiveness.

Deommodore Lenoir of L.A. Salesian is a safety with outstanding speed and committed to Oregon.
Jaiden Woodbey of St. John Bosco is a safety who hits with the best. Max Williams of Gardena Serra is a sophomore rising fast.

Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, Serra, L.A. Cathedral and Rancho Cucamonga are among the schools with multiple top defensive backs.

Reggie Whitfield is back for Corona Centennial and a veteran of on team that made it to the Open Division state bowl game.

Sophomore Zach Charbonnet of Oaks Christian is an impact player in his first season on varsity. Chris Lewis of Canoga Park and Justin Prince of Narbonne can be among the best in the City Section. Mekhi Ware of Culver City had 11 interceptions last season.
