Football: Defensive linemen to watch

Share

There’s some impressive defensive linemen ready to make life miserable for quarterbacks this season.

Jacob Callier returns for St. John Bosco, and he had 12 sacks as a junior. He’s 6 feet 3, 250 pounds and has been working very hard in the weight room.

Hunter Echols of Cathedral, a USC commit, recorded 17 sacks as a junior.
Terrance Lang of Maranatha is a 6-6, 270-pound senior who gained lots of attention in the off season. He also plays basketball.

Perhaps the most highly regarded pass rusher is Jaelan Phillips of Redlands East Valley. He’s 6-5, 240 pounds and committed to UCLA.

Matthew Horwitz of L.A. University had 86 tackles playing defensive end. There’s some outstanding juniors, led by Mykee Irving of Chaminade and Sal Spina of St. John Bosco. Keon Ware-Hudson of Vista Murrieta and Reese Silofau of Oaks Christian are rising sophomores.

Then there’s Martin Andrus of Los Angeles. He has to be one of the strongest, most feared linemen in the City Section.

Dominic Peterson of Narbonne will be very tough to block. Another City Section force is sophomore Kayvon Thibodeaux of Dorsey. Carlos Nunez of Garfield was the top defensive player in the Eastern League.
