Football: Eagle Rock is emerging as a top team in City Section Division II
- Share via
While San Fernando and Symar have been considered the early favorites to win City Section Division II, don’t forget about Eagle Rock. The Eagles are 5-0 and have routed Jefferson, South Pasadena, Torres, Temple City and La Canada.
They begin Northern League play on Friday against Franklin.
The defense has been particularly impressive, led by two-time All-City defensive back Paul Gandara, who has four interceptions, including a 105-yard interception return for a touchdown. Juan Luna has returned two fumbles for touchdowns, including a 96-yarder.
Quarterback Vince Loera is the rarest of the rare _ he’s also a starting middle linebacker. He has passed for 10 touchdowns. Eagle Rock has been givien a big lift by the play of sophomore running back Mike Soracco, who has rushed for 642 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.
Receiver Nick Jovanelly has been a big-play weapon.
So hold off on those predictions of a Sylmar-San Fernando rematch in the Division II final. Somebody is going to have to get past Eagle Rock first.
