Football: First-year coach wants to bring back Manual Arts tradition

Manual Arts was once a City Section football power. Now the Toilers have a first-year coach, DeAndre Nichols, who wants to revitalize the football program.

Nichols, who's a 2005 Manual Arts grad and coached the offensive line at Hawkins last season, has 10 starters back, led by junior running back Darion Turner.

Donaven Gross, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound offensive lineman, will be an important contributor up front. Senior linebacker Marco Munoz "is the hardest working kid in the City," according to Nichols.

Ernest Flynn, a 6-4 sophomore quarterback, will be asked to make things happen on offense.

Nichols' goal is to "help this generation of student athletes better their lives through football such as I did."
