Football: Jeremiah Martin wins starting QB position at St. Francis

Share

La Canada St. Francis has two outstanding receivers in junior Dylan Crawford and senior John Carroll, a tight end, and now the Golden Knights finally have their starting quarterback.

Jeremiah Martin, who didn’t play football last season as a junior, has won the job after competition in the spring and summer.

He’s a 6-foot, 190-pound former baseball player who did well as the starting quarterback for the freshman and JV teams. Coach Jim Bonds said Martin decided not to play football last season while focusing on baseball, then changed his mind after the season.

“He said he had made a mistake and wanted to come back,” Bonds said. “He might be the strongest kid on our team. He loves the weight room and will be an excellent runner.”

St. Francis is considered the favorite in the new Angelus League made of Harvard-Westlake, Cathedral, Salesian, St. Paul, St. Francis and La Salle.

There’s some uncertainty at quarterback in the league. Cathedral is waiting to see if MC Poe, last season’s starter, returns. He moved to Houston during the summer. Harvard-Westlake is trying to get back Marshal Cohen from a torn ACL. Salesian is breaking in a new quarterback, Damion Wright, a transfer from Jurupa Hills.
