Football: San Marino falls to Modesto Central Catholic, 56-21

San Marino suffers defeat in bowl game

There was no hiding the sorrow among San Marino players. Tears were flowing freely. Their final game of a season to remember ended in a 56-21 defeat to Modesto Central Catholic (16-0) in the CIF state championship Open Division small school bowl final at Sacramento State on Saturday night.

There always will be a what if about this game. What if San Marino could have used quarterback Carson Glazier, who suffered a concussion last week and was prohibited from playing because of a mandatory seven-day sitout period. Glazier had passed for 4,119 yards and 47 touchdowns.

But Central Catholic (16-0) pretty much did whatever it wanted on offense behind Fresno State-bound Justin Rice, who rushed for 216 yards in 19 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Cornerback Da-Ron Bland returned interceptions 43 and 39 yards for touchdowns.

J.P. Shohfi of San Marino (15-1) ended a remarkable season with eight receptions for 197 yards. He finished with 121 catches for 2,464 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Coach Mike Hobbie of San Marino was proud of his neighborhood boys.

“All my kids are San Marino kids,” he said. “No transfers.”
