Football: Some unfinished business in the Big VIII League

Share

Thursday night football comes to the Big VIII League, where Corona Centennial (7-2, 4-0), Norco 6-3, 3-1) and Corona Santiago (5-4, 3-1) all would like to end the regular season on a winning note going into the Inland Division playoffs.

Centennial can wrap up another league championship with a victory over visiting Corona. Norco, which started the season with a new coach and a new quarterback, can finish in second place with a win on the road against Santiago.

All three schools have improved over the course of the season, making them dangerous opponents for the playoffs.

For some reason, Centennial continues to have its skeptics whether the Huskies are truly an elite team because of losses to Long Beach Poly and Alemany. Hey, those two schools were very good when healthy earlier this season. Centennial’s offense remains very tough to stop. Tre Watson has rushed for 2,271 yards and 34 touchdowns. Robert Webber has passed for 2,296 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Norco Coach Larry Baker has to be in the coach of the year conversation. He took over for a fired Todd Gerhart, then had to find a new quarterback after Coltin Gerhart transferred to Vista Murrieta. Cory Young has rushed for 1,598 yards behind a talented offensive line.

Santiago has one of the most productive offenses in the Inland Empire. Quarterback Blake Barnett has 16 touchowns passing and 11 touchdowns running.
