Football: Summer is over after St. John Bosco wins final tourney

Summer passing season ends

The final major summer seven on seven passing tournament was completed on Saturday at Huntington Beach, and St. John Bosco defeated Bishop Amat to win the championship.

The Braves also won the lineman competition and look ready to challenge Corona Centennial for supremacy in Southern California football.

Quarterback Quentin Davis will take over for Josh Rosen, but sophomore Re-al Mitchell figures to get some playing time because of his speed and potential.

Among the highlights was Crespi unveiling its likely starting quarterback, sophomore Hamish McClure. The Celts lost to Torrey Pines in the third-place game. McClure was the starter for the freshman team and appears to be a good fit for running the Celts’ veer attack.

“I love the veer, the triple option,” he said. “The challenge is getting my feet right.”

San Clemente junior quarterback Jack Sears showed off the kind of strong arm that enabled him to pick up an offer to Utah. He should have no problem taking over for USC-bound Sam Darnold.

Tesoro’s Devon Modster will have lots of success this fall. And ditto for Orange Lutheran left-handed quarterback LJ Northington, who should have an effective offensive line supporting him based on their strength in winning the tug-a-war competition.

Official practice begins on July 27 for City Section teams and Aug. 3 for Southern Section teams.

The season kicks off on Aug. 28.

Correction: An earlier version of this blog had Jack Sears having committed to Utah. He has an offer from Utah.
