Boys’ basketball: The athlete to watch is Chaminade’s Michael Wilson

College football coaches looking for a good receiver will want to drop by a Chaminade basketball game over the next four months to check out 6-foot-2, 175-pound sophomore Michael Wilson.

He just finished his football season with 36 catches for 463 yards and four touchdowns. After 3 1/2 practices, he was in the starting lineup on Tuesday night for the Eagles’ basketball team and contributed 10 points, six rebounds, one block, two steals and five assists in Chaminade’s 70-65 victory over Royal in an opening game of the Calabasas tournament.

Josh Hauser, a transfer from Thousand Oaks, had 32 points for Chaminade. Freshman Makur Maker, who’s 6-11, made an impressive debut with 13 points.

But if you want to know whether Chaminade will develop into a top team, follow the progress of Wilson, who’s one of the best athletes in the school. He had a key defensive rebound late in the fourth quarter in which the official could have called a foul but Wilson outjumped the Royal player to grab the ball. It was similar to Francis Owusu’s catch for Stanford earlier this season.

“Michael Wilson is a Division I football player and I tell him he has a chance to be a Division I basketball player,” first-year Coach Ryan Moore said.

Moore was impressed with Wilson despite his limited practice time.

“Imagine when he learns the plays,” Moore said.

Paul Moore had 14 points for Royal (1-1), which used a 13-0 run to take the lead in the second half, only to see Chaminade rally behind Hauser.

Wilson was doing his best to switch from football to basketball mode.

“I still have football legs,” he said. “My mind is trying to tell me to do things my body can’t.”

Wilson is going to find himself heavily recruited by football coaches, especially when they see what he can do on a basketball court.

“Football is forgotten right now,” he said. “That will come back.”
