Marty Shaughnessy, a highly successful football coach at Los Angeles Loyola from 1973 through 1975, died on Wednesday in Murrieta after a bout with cancer, according to his wife, Patricia. He was 71.

“He was a great guy and a great coach,” said Steve Grady, who served as an assistant under Shaughnessy and succeeded him as head coach.

Under Shaughnessy, Loyola went 13-0 in 1975, won the AAAA championship and was recognized as a national champion. He had taken over a program that was 0-9 the year before he arrived. His three-year record was 27-6.

Shaughnessy brought with him Jon Dawson as an assistant, and he became the Cubs’ longtime defensive coordinator under Grady.

Shaughnessy played football at St. Paul and later coached at St. Bernard and Long Beach City College.

A funeral rosary and mass is planned for June 2 at St. Martha’s Catholic Church in Murrieta at 9:30 a.m. There will be a lunch at Bear Creak Clubhouse at 11:30 a.m.
