Angels’ Jered Weaver to start Wednesday against San Francisco

Jered Weaver will come off the disabled list to start Wednesday night against the San Francisco Giants, Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said Monday, a move that could lead to the demotion of Garrett Richards to triple-A Salt Lake despite Richards’ 2-0 record and 0.86 earned-run average in four games.

If that happens, Weaver will feel Richards’ pain.

Weaver was 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA in his first four big league starts in late May and early June of 2006, but when Bartolo Colon, the 2005 Cy Young Award winner, came off the DL in mid-June, Weaver was sent back to Salt Lake.

The right-hander returned three weeks later after his older brother, Jeff, was designated for assignment and finished his rookie season with an 11-2 record and 2.56 ERA. Jered Weaver went on to become the Angels’ ace and 2011 All-Star game starter.

“It’s a tough gig,” Weaver said of Richards’ possible demotion. “You try so hard to get up here and prove you can pitch at this level. I feel for him. I remember that experience. It made me want to go down and work harder to get back up here.”

Scioscia said he has not decided who will be pulled from the rotation to make room for Weaver, but the likely move will be to send Richards to Salt Lake, where he can remain stretched out as a starter and ready if a rotation spot opens up.

Richards, 24, threw eight scoreless innings in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Arizona, the right-hander’s fastball hitting 96 mph in the eighth inning.

There has been speculation that struggling right-hander Ervin Santana will be sent to the bullpen, but his one-hit shutout of the Diamondbacks on Saturday probably solidified his rotation spot.

Starters Dan Haren and C.J. Wilson aren’t going anywhere. The only other possible move would be with Jerome Williams, who took a 6-4 record and 4.20 ERA into Monday’s start but didn’t help his cause by allowing four runs and seven hits and walking three in 3 1/3 innings against the Giants.

“Jered is going to start Wednesday and Haren will start Friday” against the Dodgers, Scioscia said. “Then, we’ll see where we’re going from there.”

Weaver, who has not pitched since suffering a lower back strain in the first inning against the New York Yankees on May 28, will be limited to 80 to 90 pitches Wednesday night.

Weaver threw a 60-pitch simulated game Friday and a 40-pitch bullpen session Sunday. The Angels could have sent Weaver out for a one-game rehabilitation stint, “but we didn’t want him to waste bullets in the minor leagues,” Scioscia said. “There’s no reason he shouldn’t get through five or six innings.”

Short hops

Catcher Chris Iannetta, who suffered a forearm strain while rehabilitating the broken right wrist he suffered in early May, resumed his throwing program Monday, but only with a light catch. He won’t long-toss until later this week and appears at least two weeks away from a minor league rehab assignment. “It’s going to take some time,” Scioscia said. “Hopefully not weeks, but it’s not day to day.” … The Angels made three roster moves Monday, activating catcher Bobby Wilson off the seven-day concussion DL, recalling infielder Andrew Romine from Salt Lake and designating reliever David Pauley for assignment. If Pauley clears waivers he probably will be sent to Salt Lake.
