Clippers’ Ronny Turiaf answers the call

— Ronny Turiaf sat on the Clippers’ bench for the first three quarters Monday night, never hanging his head, always cheering and staying tuned to the game.

When Turiaf got his call 2 minutes 23 seconds into the fourth quarter, he delivered some big moments for the Clippers against the San Antonio Spurs.

“I’m a guy who likes to watch the game and see what I can bring to the table,” Turiaf said. “I’ve always prided myself on staying mentally connected.”

Turiaf finished with three rebounds, all offensive, and four points in 5:10 after he got the call when Ryan Hollins fouled out.

“I’m not going to lie to you. I was surprised to hear my name called out there at that point,” Turiaf said. “I was fortunate to get a couple of offensive rebounds and that helped us.”

Turiaf began his assault on the offensive glass by tipping in a missed shot by Jamal Crawford and dunking another missed shot by Crawford.

“Ronny is not sitting over there pouting,” Chris Paul said. “He’s sitting over there cheering and being a great teammate. And when his number is called, he’s ready to go.”

Turiaf hustled for another offensive rebound that he didn’t collect, but the Spurs lost the ball out of bounds, giving the Clippers another scoring opportunity.

That led to a basket by Blake Griffin and a nine-point Clippers lead.

“I said that’s like a true professional right there,” Griffin said about Turiaf. “He didn’t play much the last two games and he came in in a critical time and had a putback, a putback, a rebound. That’s tough to do.”

Playing hurt

Caron Butler, Matt Barnes and Hollins all played despite injuries, with Butler’s being the most serious.

Butler started but didn’t play after the first quarter because of a strained right shoulder that he injured against Chicago.

“My [shoulder] hurts,” Butler said. “I got it taped up right now.”

Barnes has an injured left pinkie and Hollins has a sprained left ankle.

Hollins, who had his left ankle taped against San Antonio, said he was injured against Atlanta.

“It’s not going to get better because I keep playing on it,” Hollins said.

The Clippers announced that they hired Dennis Rogers as director of public relations and publications. Rogers had been the director of basketball communications with the New Orleans Hornets. ... Seth Burton was promoted to director of communications. He was an assistant to Rob Raichlen, who recently left the organization after 20 years.
