Long Beach State beats UC Riverside by 40 points

at Long Beach State 75, UC Riverside 35: The balanced 49ers shot 53% and handed the Highlanders their seventh loss in a row. It was the fewest points Long Beach (16-9, 12-2 Big West) has given up since UC Irvine scored 26 in 1980. Tony Freeland scored 14 points and James Ennis had 12 for the first-place 49ers, who had a 31-19 halftime lead and closed the game with a 28-5 run. Riverside (5-20, 2-11) shot 24%.

St. Mary’s 61, at Loyola Marymount 50: The Gaels used an early 14-0 run to hand the Lions their 10th consecutive loss. Anthony Ireland had 19 points for Loyola Marymount (8-18, 1-12 West Coast Conference) but was only two for 11 from the floor, part of a 30% team shooting effort. Stephen Holt made six of eight shots and scored 16 points for St. Mary’s (22-5, 11-2), which swept the season series with the Lions and stayed 1 1/2 games behind No. 5 Gonzaga for first place in the conference.

at Nevada Las Vegas 72, San Diego State 70: Anthony Bennett had 21 points and 12 rebounds, and the Rebels (19-7, 6-5 Mountain West) hung on in the final seconds. After a 14-0 run gave UNLV its largest lead at 67-57, the Aztecs (18-7, 6-5) came back and had a chance to go ahead in the final seconds, but Jamaal Franklin was called for traveling with two seconds remaining. Chase Tapley led the Aztecs with 22 points and six rebounds. JJ O’Brien added 15 points, all in the first half, and 11 rebounds.

at UC Davis 73, Cal State Northridge 61: Corey Hawkins scored 31 points and the Aggies (11-13, 7-6 Big West) pulled away in the second half to defeat the Matadors (13-14, 4-11). Hawkins made nine of 12 shots, including six of eight from three-point range. Stephan Hicks had 17 points for Northridge, which made up a 39-26 halftime deficit to tie the score at 41-41 before Davis took control again.

at Cal Poly 67, UC Santa Barbara 49: The Mustangs (12-11, 8-5 Big West) won their third game in row, taking a 29-21 halftime lead and cruising past the Gauchos (8-16, 4-9), who have lost six out of seven.

at Santa Clara 70, Pepperdine 60: Kevin Foster scored 22 points to lead the Broncos (19-8, 7-5 WCC), who took a 17-point lead in the first half and were never headed. Jordan Baker led the Waves (12-14, 4-9) with 18 points.

at UC Irvine 86, Cal State Fullerton 66: Daman Starring made seven three-pointers and finished with 21 points as the Anteaters improved to 14-13, 8-6 in the Big West. James Douglas’ 14 points led the Titans (12-13, 5-8).
