Ducks sign Kyle Palmieri to three-year, $4.4-million extension

The Ducks on Friday signed promising forward Kyle Palmieri to a three-year contract extension valued at $4.4 million, the team said Friday.

Palmieri will earn $1.35 million in the coming season, $1.45 million in 2014-15 and $1.6 million in 2015-16, according to a hockey official familiar with the contract but not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The 22-year-old opened the season on the Ducks’ first line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, but was later slotted with other teammates as Coach Bruce Boudreau worked to maximize Palmieri’s speed and shot accuracy.

The team’s first-round draft pick in 2009 finished with 21 points, including 10 goals, in the regular season and tied for the team lead with three goals in the Ducks’ first-round playoff series loss to Detroit.

Klinsmann suspended for Gold Cup final

U.S. soccer Coach Juergen Klinsmann will miss the Gold Cup final Sunday against Panama after drawing a one-game suspension for his tirade during the tournament semifinals.

CONCACAF’s disciplinary committee handed out the punishment Friday night, saying FIFA’s rules call for anyone ejected from a match to be banned from the following game. Klinsmann was ejected in the 87th minute Wednesday in a 3-1 victory over Honduras after protesting several no-calls against his players. He slammed a ball into the ground and could be seen yelling and gesturing angrily in the direction of the referee.

He later apologized, saying he’d acted out of frustration.

Mahan shoots 64, takes Canadian Open lead

Hunter Mahan birdied the final three holes Friday for an eight-under 64 and a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Canadian Open at Oakville, Ontario.

Coming off a ninth-place tie last week in the British Open, the five-time PGA Tour winner had eight birdies in his bogey-free round at Glen Abbey to reach 13-under 131.

John Merrick was second after a 62. He tied the course record set by Leonard Thompson in 1981 and matched by Andy Bean in 1983 — both when Glen Abbey played to a par of 71 — and Greg Norman in 1986. Merrick had an eagle and 10 birdies, playing the back nine in six-under 31.

Bubba Watson was nine under after a 67. Aaron Baddeley and Patrick Reed shot 68 to reach eight under, and Tommy Gainey (64), Chris Kirk (69) and James Hahn (68) followed at seven under.

American Mark Wiebe shot at five-under 65 at Royal Birkdale for a share of the lead with Germany’s Bernhard Langer after the second round of the Senior British Open at Southport, England.

Langer, the 2010 champion at Carnoustie, had a 67 to match Wiebe at five-under 135.

South Africa’s David Frost was a stroke back after a 68. First-round leader Gene Sauers had a 70 join Peter Fowler (69) and Mark McNulty (67) at three under.

Lakareber Abe moved into position to become the first black female player to win a U.S. Golf Assn. individual championship, winning two matches to advance to the 36-hole final in the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at Fort Wayne, Ind., where she will face Gabriella Then of Upland.

Abe, 17, from Angleton, Texas, beat Kathleen Scavo of Benicia, Calif., 4 and 3 in the morning quarterfinals, and topped Bethany Wu of Diamond Bar, Calif., 1 up in the afternoon semifinals.

Then, a 17-year-old who will be a freshman at USC, beat Yueer Feng of Orlando, Fla., 1 up in the semifinals, and edged Megan Khang of Rockland, Mass., 2 and 1 in the semifinals.

Scottie Scheffler of Dallas and Davis Riley of Hattiesburg, Miss., won quarterfinal and semifinal matches at Martis Camp Club in Truckee, Calif., to advance to the 36-hole final in the U.S. Junior Amateur.

Isner beats Blake at Atlanta Open

Top-seeded John Isner advanced to his fourth straight Atlanta Open semifinal, beating James Blake, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5).

Isner will face seventh-seeded Lleyton Hewitt, the Australian who overcame a disastrous start to beat third seed Ivan Dodig, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

In the night quarterfinals, second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa topped Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, and American Ryan Harrison beat Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2).

The Lakers have signed former Gonzaga forward Elias Harris to a two-year, minimum-salary contract.

Harris, who went undrafted in June, impressed the team with his play in Las Vegas as part of the Lakers’ summer league squad. In five appearances, Harris averaged 10.2 points on 44.7% shooting and 5.6 rebounds a game.
