Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer done for season with knee injury

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer is finished for the season with a severe knee injury, Coach Rob Chudzinski said Friday.

“I just got word back on the MRI for Brian Hoyer. It is a torn ACL that will require surgery,” Chudzinski said. “There is no other damage besides the ACL. Obviously he’ll be out for the season.”

Hoyer, who two weeks ago was promoted from third string to starter and since has helped lead an unlikely Browns resurgence, suffered the injury on a scramble in the first quarter of Thursday’s 37-24 victory over Buffalo.

Hoyer’s right leg tucked under him while he was trying to slide, and he bent back awkwardly when hit by linebacker Kiko Alonso.

Former Browns starter Brandon Weeden, who had been recovering from a thumb injury, replaced the injured Hoyer and led Cleveland to its third consecutive victory.
