Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith to miss Sunday’s game because of head injury

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith will miss Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after his head bounced hard off the turf twice during last weekend’s game in Indianapolis.

Nick Foles will start in his place and Tyler Bray will serve as the backup.

Smith said Wednesday he never failed any of the concussion tests administered after each of the blows, the second of which knocked him from the game. But after consulting with Coach Andy Reid and others in the front office, it was decided he would not be active this week.

Smith will run the practice squad and hopes to play next week at Carolina.

Foles was sharp in relief against the Colts, completing 16 of 22 passes for 223 yards with two touchdowns and no picks in the Chiefs’ 30-14 victory.

Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles had exploratory surgery on his right knee Wednesday as the Chiefs try to determine why there is lingering pain from reconstructive surgery last season. Charles was placed on injured reserve, which means he will miss at least eight weeks. Charles tore his right ACL in Week 5 last season.

Turner resigns

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner abruptly resigned Wednesday, stunning the team two days after losing its second consecutive game with an offense nowhere to be found.

Coach Mike Zimmer’s voice cracked and his bottom lip quivered near the end of his news conference while discussing his relationship with Turner, whom he hired to run his offense after getting the job with the Vikings in 2014. Zimmer said the decision was made entirely by Turner, who was replaced by Pat Shurmur.

“Norv is a very, very good friend of mine. He has helped me tremendously in the three years that I’ve been here,” Zimmer said. “He’s had an unbelievable career. He’s been, really, my right-hand man.”

The Vikings have scored only 10 points in each loss after a 5-0 start to the season, with the offensive line’s performance the primary concern. Quarterback Sam Bradford, who was sacked 11 times over the last two games.

“It just got to the point where I didn’t think it was going to work with me, so I removed myself,” Turner told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Turner also said that philosophical differences with Zimmer were the primary reason for his resignation.
