Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant’s big game overshadowed by crucial drop

Dez Bryant made enough spectacular plays against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday for it to have been considered a breakout day for the Dallas Cowboys receiver.

But the focus during the post-game news conference was on his one gaffe, midway through the fourth quarter. After breaking free from the Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers, Bryant dropped a a perfectly thrown deep pass by Tony Romo that could have erased, or at least put the Cowboys in position to erase, a four-point deficit.

Instead, Dallas lost, 17-16.

“I knew I had it. That’s what I was thinking,” Bryant said of the muffed play. “Took my eyes off the ball. Shouldn’t have. That was a real bad mistake. That is not winning football. I can’t win like that. I can’t beat the guy and be nonchalant with the football.”

Bryant seemed much harder on himself than other key members of the Cowboys organization. Romo called the drop “an anomaly.”

Owner Jerry Jones added: “They all drop ‘em and Dez catches a lot more than he drops. Some of his plays really had us in position to win this ballgame.”

But Bryant was in no mood to talk about any of his nine catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. When Mac Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram asked if those plays — rather than the drop — were indicative of what he could offer the Cowboys this season, the receiver’s response said it all.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t answer that question,” Bryant said.
