Bishop Amat upsets St. Bonaventure in overtime

As soon as the kick left his foot, La Puente Bishop Amat kicker Alexander Ragsdale said he knew the extra-point attempt was going through the uprights.

And when it did, the Lancers swarmed the field Friday at Kiefer Stadium. The extra point secured a 24-23 overtime victory over No. 4 St. Bonaventure, a feat Coach Steve Hagerty had said earlier in the week would compare to the “Miracle on Ice.”

The win ends St. Bonaventure’s (4-1) 14-game winning streak that extends to last season and gives the Lancers (4-0) reason to think they can compete outside the Serra League.

“I’m so excited,” Ragsdale said. “Coach told me to do the simple things and I did that.”

After St. Bonaventure quarterback Logan Meyer ran for a one-yard touchdown run to put the Seraphs up 23-17 in overtime, Lancers defensive back Davis Cazares blocked Mason Kirk’s extra-point try. Ragsdale had missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter.

“Ever single PAT is a new one,” Ragsdale said. “Every single field goal is a new one. I had to get it out of my head, focus on the next one and have a short-term memory.”

Bishop Amat’s Darien Johnson had two touchdowns -- one on a 91-yard kickoff return that gave the Lancers a 10-3 lead with 11:08 left in the second quarter and another on an 84-yard interception return that tied it at 17-17 with 6:23 remaining in the third quarter.

Meyer finished with 19 of 37 for 253 yards with two interceptions.

St. Bonaventure running back Devon Blackledge had 26 rushes for 131 yards. Bishop Amat running back Jay Anderson had 23 carries for 108 yards and one touchdown.

His one-yard touchdown run was what tied it at 23-23 in overtime, which ultimately set up the winning kick.

Oaks Christian beats Venice

It was just a matter of time for Malcolm Jones. Held in check for most of the first half, the Westlake Village Oaks Christian tailback proved unstoppable during the final two quarters of the No. 2 Lions’ 33-13 victory over host Venice.

Jones rushed for 211 of his school-record 329 yards and three of his four touchdowns in the second half to help Oaks Christian (4-0) pull away from the Gondoliers (3-1), who trailed by only seven points early in the fourth quarter.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a better performance in high school,” Oaks Christian Coach Bill Redell said.

With Venice linebacker Jonathan McNeal shadowing Jones on every play, the tailback was mostly shut down until he hurdled a defender and scored on a spectacular 60-yard touchdown run late in the first half.

Jones added scoring runs of 38, 69 and 30 yards in the second half.

Ryan Kasdorf completed 10 of 15 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns, breaking the school record for career passing yards (4,378) as Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, ranked No. 13 by The Times, defeated Compton Dominguez, 48-10. Kasdorf, who also ran for two touchdowns, has 4,386 career passing yards. . . . Chad Dashaw threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Cornell Wiley in the second overtime to lift Harbor City Narbonne (2-2) to a 37-31 intersectional victory over No. 18 Orange Lutheran (1-3). . . . Josh Dean threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead Dana Hills (3-1) to a 41-7 upset over No. 23 Newport Beach Newport Harbor (3-1).
