Boys Roundup : Capo Valley Gets Hot to Beat Edison

A 14-day layoff certainly didn’t seem to hurt Capistrano Valley High School much Saturday night as the Cougars rolled to a 59-50 win over Edison at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.

The game was the final tuneup for the Cougars before they begin South Coast League play, and they improved their record to 12-2. Edison fell to 7-5.

Guard Gregg Bujnovsky scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half as Capistrano Valley opened a 12-point lead. Bujnovsky made three straight shots in the third quarter to give the Cougars a comfortable lead, but Edison never folded down the stretch.

Capistrano Valley made 13 of 20 shots in the second half after a sluggish first half. Edison opened with a 9-4 lead in the first quarter and led at the end of the period, 13-12.

But 6-8 reserve center John Waikle helped the Cougars take control of the game in the second quarter and Edison never regained the lead. Waikle, a transfer from Villa Park, scored all five of his points in the second quarter and also had four rebounds.

Edison Coach Jon Borchert got an indication of whether his team could contend with heavyweights Fountain Valley and Ocean View in the Sunset League. With only one nonleague game remaining against Long Beach Wilson, it doesn’t appear as if the Chargers are on the same level with the two favorites.

Servite transfer Baron Coenen continues to be Edison’s most consistent player, but inconsistency at the free throw line hurt the Chargers. Edison made 10 of 18 free throw attempts.

Capistrano Valley has advanced to the Southern Section 3-A division semifinals the past two years and made it to the 2-A final in 1982. This year’s team is another strong edition with the passing of point guard Nathan Call, the shooting of Bujnovsky, the inside play of Jason Trask and Reid Lukes and the ever-improving Waikle.

“If someone would have told me we would be 12-2 at this stage with only one starter returning, I would have been very happy,” Cougar Coach Mark Thornton said. “I thought we would have problems playing together, but that hasn’t been the case.
