Angelus League : Mater Dei High Eases Up but Still Defeats Bishop Montgomery Going Away, 90-44

Mater Dei High School, ahead, 43-19, at halftime, outscored Bishop Montgomery, 19-2, at the outset of the second half en route to a 90-44 win in an Angelus League game Wednesday night at Bishop Montgomery.

Tom Lewis was 12 of 19 from the field and 11 of 12 from the free throw line to finish with a game-high 35 points for the Monarchs (2-0, 17-0). Lewis went to the bench after playing 21 minutes. Mike Mitchell added 15 points for Mater Dei. The Monarchs were 31 of 55 from the field.

“We tried playing a lot of people to keep the score down,” Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight said afterward. “Offensively, we’re executing a lot better.”

T.J. Wnek was the only starter to score for Bishop Montgomery. Wnek scored his team’s first 11 points--22 of the first 27. Bishop Montgomery drops to 0-2 in league play, 3-12 overall.

McKnight was asked if such lopsided league games could be a handicap for Mater Dei when it reached the Southern Section playoffs.

“After the preseason we had, it’s kind of a rest time for us,” he said. “But I think Pius will give us a good game on Friday, and Servite is always an emotional game.”

Servite 61, St. Paul 53--Senior Matt Honikel had a game-high 33 points to lead the Friars to the win at St. Paul. Honikel, a 6-5 center, was 10 of 14 from field, 13 of 16 from the free throw line and pulled down 7 rebounds. Matt Willig led St. Paul with 17 points.
