San Diego Prep Basketball : Monte Vista Routs Granite Hills

Granite Hills High School guard Tom Shawcroft scored a game-high 27 points Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough to keep his team from being routed by fourth-ranked Monte Vista, 82-47, in a Grossmont League basketball game at Monte Vista.

Monte Vista (10-0 conference, 16-1 overall) was led by 6-foot 6-inch forward Demetrius Laffitte, who scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds. Barney Laffitte and David Burgess scored 14 points apiece.

Granite Hills dropped to 3-7 in conference and 4-13 overall.

In other Grossmont League games:

El Capitan 87, Mt. Miguel 60--Steve Burroughs scored a game-high 26 points to lead the second-place Vaqueros to victory. Other leading scorers for the seventh-ranked Vaqueros (8-1, 14-3) were Matt Schmidt with 14 and Aaron Johnson 11. Mt. Miguel (1-9, 3-14) was led by Lavon Reis, who scored 12 points. Keith Lusk and Chris Penman had 10 each.

Valhalla 50, Santana 42--The Fighting Norsemen avenged an early-season loss to the Sultans in a game played at Valhalla High. Santana’s Jim Tatum, the county’s leading scorer (23.4 ppg) scored 10 points in the first period and finished the half with 13. In the second half, however, Valhalla’s defense held Tatum to eight points. Valhalla (5-5, 7-11) was led by Mike Pellieter, who scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds, and Todd Christiansen’s 14. Santana dropped to 5-5 and 10-7 overall.

Helix 69, El Cajon 35--The Highlanders ran away from the Braves, taking a 32-11 halftime lead en route to the win. Helix (7-2, 12-5) was led by Mike Favero, who scored 20 points. Javier Casteneda had 14 points and 7 assists, and Eric Mobley, 11. El Cajon (4-6, 7-9) was led by Robert Jones with 14 points.

In a non-league game:

El Camino 70, San Dieguito 48--The eighth-ranked Wildcats of the Avocado League put four players in double figures in the victory over the Mustangs of the Palomar League in a game played at El Camino. Ken Crawford led the attack with 16 points, Kevin Taylor had 14, Nathan Reed 11 and Steve Heard 10. El Camino is 15-2 overall and 5-1 in league play. San Dieguito (1-5, 4-11) was led by Keith Schneringer and Danny Henderson, who scored nine points apiece.
