Prep Baseball : Hulshof Gets His Record 10th Win for Mater Dei, 16-6

Jon Hulshof set a Mater Dei High School record for most victories in a season as the Monarchs beat Bishop Montgomery in Angelus League play Saturday, 16-6.

The win, the second this week for Hulshof over the Knights, gave him a record of 10-1. He bettered the former standard of 9-2, set last season by Pat Dubar, who is now pitching for Pepperdine.

On Wednesday, Hulshof pitched a complete-game three-hitter and won, 6-0. Saturday, he came back to pitch 2 innings in relief to pick up the win.

The Monarchs were led in the rout by Mike Kelly, who went 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, and Bobby DeJardin, who had one hit, scored three runs and stole four bases.

Mater Dei improved its record to 10-1 in league and 18-1 overall and will likely remain atop the next Orange County Sportswriters Assn. prep baseball poll.

In other Angelus League play:

Servite 12, Pius X 2--Junior catcher Jason Rolish went 3 for 3, scored three runs and had four RBIs on two homers to lead the Friars to the win at Servite.

Rolish hit a two-run homer in the second inning and a solo shot in the third. Chris Ulmer (1-2) picked up the win for the Friars.

Servite (6-5 and 9-8) hosts Mater Dei twice next week, Wednesday and Saturday.

In Sunset League action:

Westminster 4, Edison 3--Steve Gulley hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning at Edison to give the Lions the lead and eventually the win.

Robert Martinez had two hits, scored two runs and threw a runner out at the plate in the first inning from his center-field position.

The win improved Westminster’s record to 3-7-1 in league and 6-10-1 overall. Edison fell to 6-5 and 15-8.
