Anderson Southland Pro of ’85

Jerry Anderson, head professional at the Chevy Chase Country Club since 1962, has been named Golf Professional of the Year by the Southern California Section of the PGA.

Last year, the Sierra Madre resident received the section’s Horton Smith Award for his work in golf education.

In 1960, Anderson won the SoCal PGA Assistant’s championship at Hillcrest CC while working for Bud Oakley at Palos Verdes GC.

Other nominees for the 1985 award were Don Collett, one of the founders of the World Golf Hall of Fame in Pinehurst, N.C., and currently head professional at Bernardo Heights CC in San Diego; Lou Skovron, golf director of the new Monarch Beach course in Laguna Niguel, and Andy Thuney, head professional at Hacienda GC.

For the first time, two UCLA golf teams will be bidding for national collegiate championships in tournaments the week of May 19.

Coach Eddie Merrins’ conference championship team, led by Pac-10 champion Duffy Waldorf, will be one of the favorites in the 88th NCAA tournament May 20-26 at the Grenelefe Resort course in Florida.

Coach Jackie Steinmann’s conference runners-up, led by Western Collegiate Athletic Assn. champion Kristal Parker, will compete in the women’s NCAA championships May 22-25 at the New Seabury course in Cape Cod, Me.

Steinmann was named co-coach of the year with Linda Vollstedt of Arizona State, the WCAA champions.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, winner of the Division II regional championship, was named to a berth in the NCAA Division II tournament starting Tuesday at the Waterwood National course in Huntsville, Tex. Sophomore Pat Burk of the Toros won individual honors over teammates Mack Smith and Mike Strlekar.

The 63rd California Women’s Amateur championship is May 20-24 at La Cumbre CC in Santa Barbara. Carol Slane of Auburn Valley CC is defending champion in the match-play tournament. A North-South team match Sunday will precede the tournament. South players are Cindy Scholefield, Marianne Towersey, Barbara Stephan and Millie Stanley. . . . The American GC plays Monday at Riviera. . . . The Gene Littler charity invitational is Monday, May 20, at Glendora CC, for the benefit of the Cancer Center at the Community Hospital of San Gabriel.

A record 364 amateurs with handicaps of 4 or less will play Tuesday at Los Serranos in an attempt to qualify for the California State Amateur. This is the 16th straight year the SoCal half of the state qualifying has been held at Jack Kramer’s course in Chino . . . The 50th annual Pasadena City Amateur, one of the largest and most successful municipal tournaments in the Southland, will be held Thursday through Sunday at the Brookside courses. An entry of 800 is anticipated. . . . Gerald Hall is retiring as head professional at Santa Ana CC after 23 years. . . . Local qualifying for the U.S. Open will be May 20 at Industry Hills and Bernardo Heights CC. The Open is June 13-16 at Oakland Hills CC in Birmingham, Mich.

Jack Lemmon, two-time Academy Award winner, and Police Chief Daryl F. Gates will co-host the 15th annual L.A. Police-Celebrity tournament Saturday at Rancho Park. Beneficiary of the charity event is the Police Memorial Foundation. . . . Don Nichols and Lyndale Hadden shot a net 59 to win Los Serranos’ partner’s best ball. . . . Frank Hardison will conduct a hickory-shafted club evaluation clinic for antique club collectors Wednesday, May 22, at 1 p.m. in the Ralph W. Miller Golf Library at Industry Hills. . . . The 19th spring championship of the U.S. National Seniors Golf Assn. starts Tuesday on three desert courses--Indian Wells, Mission Hills and Monterey CC.

The big question in the 62nd annual L.A. City Women’s championship: Will a UCLA player win again? The last four champions--Jennifer Steiner, Cindy Scholefield, Mary Enright and Marianne Huning--were all Bruins. The tournament will be Thursday and Friday at Griffith Park. . . . The Ellington Foundation Invitational will be Friday at Rancho Park, with a field that includes Sammy Davis Jr., Smokey Robinson, Fred Williamson and Al Downing. . . . Billy Casper’s 11th annual charity tournament will be May 21, at Los Coyotes CC. Casper, the Rams’ John Robinson, and BYU football Coach LaVell Edwards and Athletic Director Glen Tuckett, will play a five-hole exhibition, followed by a clinic.

Women’s club champions include Maggie Volz, Porter Valley, a 13-handicapper who shot 73 the final day to win by 12 strokes over Linda Olsen; Kathy Hanousek, Mission Viejo; Frances Hirsch, Brentwood, her 21st there and 37th overall; Jackie Parmalee, Village CC, in extra holes over Norma Stillman; and Mary Anita Tripp, Happy Wanderers GC of Indio. . . . Seventy-six sixsomes clogged Los Serranos CC for the City of Hope’s Chino Chapter scramble. Winners were Mike Baker, Bill Mammarella, Oscar Gomez, Glen E. Hall, Don Frost and Obie Erlenmeyer. . . . The 61st Long Beach match-play championship winds up next Sunday at Recreation Park. . . . The Golden State Tour plays Monday at Industry Hills, May 20 at Green River and May 23 at Fallbrook.
