5 Errors Cost St. John Bosco Ballgame, 7-2

St. John Bosco High School made five errors and lost, 7-2, to Camarillo, in a Southern Section 4-A semifinal game Tuesday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Camarillo (22-7) broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the seventh inning to win its 13th straight game and advance to Friday’s championship game against Fountain Valley at Anaheim Stadium.

St. John Bosco, which finished the season 20-5, hit the ball hard against Camarillo pitcher Charlie Fiacco but many of the Braves’ long drives were caught.

The Braves took a 2-1 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Mark Rael and a single by Kris Jondle.

The highlight of the Scorpions’ final inning was a bases-loaded single by Ken Sirak. A third runner scored when Bosco left fielder Joe Parga let the ball get by him.

The poor defense spoiled some excellent pitching by Bosco’s Kurt Stewart, who relieved starter Gene Lemmers in the first inning when Lemmers injured his elbow.

In a 1-A semifinal game, Whittier Christian lost to San Dimas, 5-3.

The Heralds (19-3) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead and when the first two batters for San Dimas made outs in the seventh it appeared Whittier Christian would advance to the finals.

But San Dimas, which had been averaging 17 runs per game in the playoffs, rallied for three runs and the victory.

“It was kind of hard to take,” said Whittier Christian Coach Doug Domene. “That game was ours.”

Kraig Johnson and Aaron Arredondo drove in runs for the Heralds in the sixth.

San Dimas (21-5) will play Baldwin Park in the championship game.
