San Diego Roundup : All-Stars Play in Baseball Tournament

Some of the top 14- and 15-year-old baseball players in San Diego County will participate in the Fourth World Boys’ Baseball Tournament, which starts Wednesday in Fresno.

The San Diego County All-Stars, who won the championship in 1983 when the tournament was held in San Diego, will meet teams from five countries in Fresno. Japan, which has hosted San Diego three times in the tournament, Korea, Brazil, Canada and Mexico will all send teams.

The tournament will continue with round-robin play until Saturday’s semifinals, and the championship game will be played Sunday.

Following the World Tournament, the San Diego County All-Stars will return with the teams from Japan and Mexico for a Friendship Tournament doubleheader at Smith Field on Aug. 22.

Motorcycle riders from both the British and American leagues will meet for the first time in the San Diego area in an AMA-sanctioned competition at the Carlsbad Raceway Sunday.

Shawn Moran, European National Long Track champion, will be featured Sunday night in a match race against his brother Kelly Moran, the current American National champion.

Other riders from Europe include Lance King and Sam Ermolenko, who both made it through all three World Championship qualifying rounds earlier this summer. Alan Christian and Steve Lucero, the top two American points leaders, will also compete.

Racing starts at 7:30 p.m.

Mark Norris of El Cajon and Jerry Gay of Lakeside both hold leads as the El Cajon Stock Car Racing Assn. season heads into its final seven weeks of action at Cajon Speedway.

Norris, a winner of seven races this season, holds a 765-point lead over Mike Hagerman of El Cajon in the super stocks division. Gay, also a seven-time winner this year, leads the pro stock division by 100 points over Lakeside’s Mike Carver.
