Weinberger Is Named Laguna Hills Coach

Paul Weinberger, an assistant football coach at Servite High School for the past four years, has been named head coach at Laguna Hills, less than three weeks before the Hawks open the 1985 season against Woodbridge.

Tony Ferruzzo, Laguna Hills principal, announced Tuesday that Weinberger, who served as the Friars’ defensive coordinator last season, would replace Ed Adams as the Hawks’ coach. The Saddleback Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees is expected to approve Weinberger’s hiring Thursday. Adams resigned Aug. 13 to become the dean of students at El Toro High School.

Weinberger served as an assistant coach at Arcadia for seven years before moving to Servite. He was hired Monday evening and was at Laguna Hills Tuesday morning for the Hawks’ second day of practice. He said he doesn’t expect the late coaching change to have a dramatic effect on his team.

“Fortunately, there’s a good staff that’s been around to keep the continuity going,” Weinberger said. “It’s not like the players have been left high and dry by the departure of an entire staff. But this certainly isn’t the ideal way to begin.”
