Tailback Andre Wooten rushed for 265 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Cerritos High School to a 29-19 season-opening win over Cypress in Anaheim’s Handel Stadium Friday night.

Cypress fell behind in the third quarter, 14-6, but then rallied for a 19-14 lead on an 80-yard touchdown pass-play from quarterback Troy O’Leary to David Downey. James Padilla followed with a 28-yard scoring run.

But Cerritos came back with a pair of touchdowns of its own in the final quarter. Wooten scored on a four-yard run and Lawrence Hubley returned an interception for a 35-yard score.

Cerritos could have walked off the field an easy winner, but the Dons had a pair of touchdowns called back and committed 16 penalties for 135 yards to help keep the Centurions in the game.

Padilla was Cypress’ leading rusher with 45 yards on 13 carries, as O’Leary completed just 6 of 18 passes for 132 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

Cerritos quarterback Gregg Piliogas completed 8 of 17 attempts for 70 yards and 3 interceptions.

The Centurions scored on the first play of the second period on a one-yard run by O’Leary, which followed Downey’s interception of Piliogas. But Cerritos came back as Wooten, a 5-foot 11-inch, 185-pound senior, scored from eight yards out after the Dons recovered an O’Leary fumble.

Joel Rubert’s nine-yard return of O’Leary’s fumble gave Cerritos a 14-6 lead in the third period before the final pair of Cypress touchdowns gave the Centurions a lead.
