PRO FOOTBALL : THE SHOCKERS : Cowboys Caught in Blitz and Are Upset by Eagles

“I guess if you live by the sword you die by the sword,” said Philadelphia quarterback Ron Jaworski, whose fourth-period, 36-yard pass to wide receiver Kenny Jackson rallied the Eagles to a 16-14 victory over Dallas Sunday, ending the Cowboys’ four-game winning streak.

“Dallas had caught us right before the half with a couple of blitzes and, in the second half, I made the touchdown play to Jackson on the same blitz they caught us in earlier,” Jaworski said.

“They were rushing with nine people. I had to get rid of the ball.”

The Eagles were trailing, 14-9, with 10:07 remaining when Jaworski’s pass was tipped by defensive back Everson Walls into the hands of Jackson at the Dallas 25. Jackson ran the rest of the way for the touchdown.

It was the second straight upset for the Eagles (3-4). Dallas slipped to 5-2.

Jaworski, who also led the Eagles to a victory over St. Louis a week earlier, completed 22 of 35 passes for a career-high 380 yards despite being sacked four times.

Jackson, who had six receptions for 134 yards, said his touchdown came on a bump-and-run.

“Walls bumped me and I just went over the top of him. The tip really didn’t make it any more difficult. I’d have caught it anyway.”

Cowboy Coach Tom Landry said the Eagles took advantage of every opportunity.

“We gave the ball away so many times (two interceptions and two fumbles), plus territory,” he said. “Basically the turnovers cost us so much in this game. Turnovers are the name of the game.”

Gary Hogeboom, who started because Danny White aggravated injured ribs in practice last week, completed 16 of 25 for 172 yards.

Tony Dorsett gained 100 yards in 20 carries. It was only the third time Dallas lost with Dorsett gaining 100 yards or more.
