Nicklaus Will Join PGA Tour in Phoenix
Jack Nicklaus says he’ll make his first Phoenix Open appearance since 1968 this year, tournament officials said.
Nicklaus had said at the Skins Game in Murrieta, Calif., in November that he’d try to make this year’s Phoenix Open, and tournament organizers the Phoenix Thunderbirds said last week they got his phone call.
Nicklaus won the Phoenix Open in 1964.
His presence in this year’s tournament, which begins Thursday, is “one of the best things to happen to the Phoenix Open in the last 10 years,” tournament Chairman Pete Ladigo said.
Nicklaus couldn’t be reached for comment, but Nicklaus spokesman Larry O’Brien said Nicklaus is looking forward to his return to the Phoenix Open.
“Jack is designing courses in the Phoenix area and he’s glad to give the fans there a chance to see his game,” O’Brien said.
