STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT / SOUTHERN REGIONAL : Girls Division II : Santa Clara, Chino in Final
Kathy Torres scored 14 points and Kim Weich added 12 Wednesday night to lead Oxnard Santa Clara High School past San Marcos, 53-42, in a semifinal game of the Girls Division II Southern Regional at Ventura College.
Santa Clara (25-4) led, 31-19, at halftime. Cindy Fenske also had a big game for Santa Clara with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists.
San Marcos, the San Diego Section 2-A champion, finished at 26-3. Robin Paladino led San Marcos with 14 points.
In the other semifinal, Chino defeated Fresno San Joaquin Memorial, 79-56. After taking an 11-point first quarter lead, Chino was not threatened. Candida Echevarria led Chino with 25 points, and Stephanie Dykstra added 18.
Southern Section 2-A champion Chino (30-1) advances to the Division II final Saturday afternoon against Southern Section 1-A champion Santa Clara at the Sports Arena. San Joaquin Memorial finished the season 24-2.
