Salinas Scores Two in Eighth to Beat Gulls
Bob Bruzik doubled in two runs in the eighth inning and Calvin Jones picked up his fifth victory as the Salinas Spurs beat the Ventura County Gulls, 4-2, Saturday at Salinas.
Reliever Bill Mendek recorded his fifth save for the Spurs.
In the second inning, Eric Fox scored on a Dave Stewart single for the Spurs’ first run. Salinas scored again in the second when Bruzik scored on a wild pitch.
With one out in the fifth, Geronimo Berroa hit a solo home run for the Gulls. Darryl Landrum then doubled to left-center field. Jim Bishop singled to left and scored Landrum.
With the scored tied at two in the eighth, Bruzik doubled to right, scoring Renard Brown and Fox.
Jones improved to 5-2 and loser Todd Provence fell to 0-2. The win improves Salinas’ record to 26-22. The Gulls are 26-22.
