Many baseball players, at any level, dream about a fairy-tale season. A season void of slumps.

David Woodhouse, the San Diego Section Player of the Year, had that type of season.

Woodhouse, the Barons’ ace pitcher, found out about the award Tuesday night at Bonita Vista’s baseball banquet.

“That means I’ve had a pretty successful season,” Woodhouse said. “People have recognized what I have done.”

The Milwaukee Brewers have recognized Woodhouse’s accomplishments and drafted him in the fourth round of Monday’s major league draft. He said he is close to signing with the Brewers.

Woodhouse was 10-0 this season with an 0.69 earned-run average. Bonita Vista made it to the semifinals of the 3-A playoffs before losing to Mount Carmel.

Santana, the 3-A champion, and Grossmont were the only schools to have two players on the All-San Diego Section first team. Santana’s Jeff Gay (.540), who has signed with the California Angels, and Mike Hook (12-1, 1.29 ERA), who has signed with the Houston Astros, were the two Sultan selections. Shon Boney and Donnie Angotti were the two Grossmont choices Mission Bay’s Rusty Filter (8-1, 1.30 ERA) was the third pitcher chosen.

The only nonsenior to make the first team was Fallbrook’s Bill Dunckel, who hit .523 this season.

Santana High had the most players picked for the first and second teams--four. Pitcher Bill Reed (10-0, 1.75 ERA) and third baseman Dale Henson (.398) made the second team.

Mount Carmel and Mission Bay each had three players chosen. Miah Bradbury was a first-team selection. Ron Kelly and Ed Van Aelstyn rounded out Mount Carmel’s selections. Mission Bay’s Sean Rees and Scott Vonderlieth also made the second team.
