Connors, Shriver Lose Matches
Americans Jimmy Connors and Pam Shriver were eliminated in first-round upsets today at Wimbledon, where top-seeded Ivan Lendl and Martina Navratilova advanced with straight-set victories.
Connors, a two-time Wimbledon champion and the No. 3 men’s seed, lost to another U.S. player, Robert Seguso, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, 7- 6, on Court No. 1. On Centre Court, American Betsy Nagelsen gained her first career victory over Shriver in eight tries, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 over the women’s No. 5 seed.
